Day 15 Duck...Duck...GOOSE!

Some Geese in the distance that had just taken off from the marsh.
Another neat evening down on Plum Island. There were fewer Black ducks tonight than there were in the past but the Geese were everywhere.

You might not be able to see them in the photos because of how far away they were, but they were indeed waddling around the marsh.

I asked my friend why there would be fewer black ducks this week and he gave a simple response "They must be in essex. It's the same marsh but there is a lot less traffic and activity." With his background in hunting with his Grandfather in essex, I trust his opinion.

Believe it or not, way off in the distance, there are about 60 Geese sitting in the water/mud.

  1. Wow, what beautiful pictures you took this evening. Despite the few spots with snow, it almost looks like it is summer time! The sunset is gorgeous, too mad there was not more activity besides the ducks. Were they making lots of noise? I always find it interesting to listen to them communicate. I look forward to seeing what next week looks like!

    1. It was really quiet! It was almost like I wasn't even close to any roads! Every now and then you would hear a Goose say "Hey" to another but not lots of conversation between them.

  2. I too found some ducks at my location and did not know what kind, so after some research I came to the conclusion that they were black ducks. I am glad that you have those too so at least I know I am not completely off base on my predictions. Also your pictures blow mine out of the water.

  3. I concur completely with relying on local/hunter knowledge about subjects like the travels of ducks. But delve ever deeper--is that a thing? That American Black Ducks prefer quiet and solitude? Do they commute between marshes daily? Or do they stick to one spot winter-round? Never be content with one simple answer. Even if it's a matter of talking to hunting friends longer about what they've seen. Many sources are useable, but mine them for more info!

  4. I live on Plum Island. The sunsets are amazing. I like the third picture down that you took the best. The picture looks like a painting. I learned something new from your post: there are a species called Black ducks on Plum Island. I do not know too many species names, I only what the birds look like.

  5. What great shots of the sky! That is my favorite time of the day. On the other hand- I hate geese. My family actually has a Border Collie who is trained to chase them off our property because of all the damage they do...Fly away geese!
